Material Type controls how a material is grouped in the Quote & Cut material picker.

It also controls how Quote & Cut Enterprise maps materials to market indexing.

You can set Material Type from:

Quote & Cut → Settings → Materials → Edit details

Available Material Types #

Quote & Cut includes these Material Types:

  • Aluminium.
  • Carbon Steel.
  • Galvanised Steel.
  • Stainless Steel.
  • Other.

Aluminium #

Use Aluminium for aluminium sheet materials.

Examples may include:

  • Aluminium 1050.
  • Aluminium 5251.
  • Aluminium 6082.

If Quote & Cut Enterprise Market Indexing is active, Aluminium materials follow the Aluminium market index.

Carbon Steel #

Use Carbon Steel for mild steel and general carbon steel sheet materials.

Examples may include:

  • Mild Steel.
  • S275.
  • S355.

If Quote & Cut Enterprise Market Indexing is active, Carbon Steel materials follow the Carbon Steel market index.

Galvanised Steel #

Use Galvanised Steel for galvanised, zintec, or zinc-coated steel sheet materials.

If Quote & Cut Enterprise Market Indexing is active, Galvanised Steel materials follow the Carbon Steel market index.

This is expected because galvanised steel is indexed through the carbon steel material family.

Stainless Steel #

Use Stainless Steel for stainless steel sheet materials.

Examples may include:

  • 304 Stainless Steel.
  • 316 Stainless Steel.

If Quote & Cut Enterprise Market Indexing is active, Stainless Steel materials follow the Stainless Steel market index.

Other #

Use Other for materials that do not fit one of the named categories.

Use Other for:

  • Custom materials.
  • Non-standard materials.
  • Materials you do not want market-indexed.
  • Materials that should not appear under Aluminium, Carbon Steel, Galvanised Steel, or Stainless Steel.
  • Materials with manually controlled pricing.

Materials set to Other are skipped by Enterprise Market Indexing.

How Material Type affects customers #

The customer quote form uses Material Type to organise the material picker.

Customers can filter by material category, thickness, and grade.

This makes it easier to find the correct material, especially when your site has many material and thickness combinations.

How Material Type affects Enterprise #

If Quote & Cut Enterprise is active, Material Type controls which market index the material follows.

The mapping is:

  • Aluminium → Aluminium index.
  • Carbon Steel → Carbon Steel index.
  • Galvanised Steel → Carbon Steel index.
  • Stainless Steel → Stainless Steel index.
  • Other → Not indexed.

To change the market index used by a material, change the material’s Type.

Existing materials after updating #

When Quote & Cut is updated, existing materials may be automatically assigned a Material Type where possible.

You should still review your material list after updating.

Check each material and confirm that the Type is correct.

Recommended review #

For every material, check:

  • Name.
  • ID.
  • Material Type.
  • Thickness.
  • Sheet cost.
  • Sheet length.
  • Sheet width.
  • Gas used.
  • Cut speed.
  • Pierce time.

Then open the quote form and confirm the material appears in the expected category.
